We are not just starting a business, but we are creating an industry. - From Douglas Chang.
DWTEK co-founder, Douglas Chang leads you to the story of where it all begins.
Established in 2008, the company started relatively early even before the construction of Taiwan’s offshore wind farm planning, Douglas sought opportunities in Taiwan’s underwater sector. He remembers, there was no underwater industry back then, but the need for equipment, such as ROVs, underwater connectors, and services in the underwater realm was real.
From his observation, he understands that manufacturing high-standard, high-priced heavy-industrial products was never Taiwan’s territory, especially in the underwater sector. It takes a high risk, a high price waiting to pay, and a return that cannot be foreseen. ‘I know very well, we won’t reach the European standards, they have been in this industry for more than a decade’ Douglas said.
DWTEK stands on what Taiwan was originally good at, which is light-industry, and we took a few steps further. DWTEK is now jockeying the position in underwater tech, setting foot in the design, and developing underwater equipment and technology products. Douglas believes, understanding the offshore wind farms’ essential needs will be the key to making wind turbines keep turning after the projects are fully installed and completed.
In 2012, the Taiwan Government announced the plan for offshore wind farms, and our business expanded unexpectedly. DWTEK stands out as the pioneer in Taiwan's underwater industry, we can fully supply subsea needs, from manufacture to equipment design, and self-developed 4 types of ROVs, we hired instructors and trained qualified ROV pilots (trained according to the IMCA R002 guideline), furthermore, we even own our offshore service vessel. So far, we have accomplished many maritime missions, such as the offshore wind farm cable inspection and O&M, wreck inspection, seabed scanning, buoy deployment, and dam maintenance and inspection…. The sky is unlimited.
