What is a ROV DVR and What are the benefits?

What is a ROV Digital Recorder(DVR)?

As the increasing usage rate of ROV worldwide, the ROV recorder(DVR) demand also increases in rent year. However, what is a “ ROV Recorder?” A ROV digital recorder(DVR) is designed to record and store video footage captured from ROV cameras, as well as capable to connect several ROV equipment such as sensor, depth, heading making these equipment’s data are available to be visible along with videos.  Currently, digital ROV recording systems are generally becoming a crucial role for ROV operations ranging from offshore wind, O&G, and other underwater inspections.

Functions of ROV Digital Recorder(DVR)

Generally, the basic functions of a ROV digital recorder include “at least 4-channel video and audio inputs, data overlay, event creation.” Data overlay is a group of information sourced from ROV’s sensor, or other equipment, allowing these data to be visible and displayed above video. Overlays are vital for ROV operators since these data can help them analyze and understand the conditions of an underwater environment and ROV.

How about an “Event Creation?” For ROV operation, it always takes several hours and days to be complete which means a huge amount of ROV video footage is accumulated; for ROV operators, that would definitely be a nightmare since they need to takes hours and hours to replay and organize video clips to find an important footage they need. This is the main reason why Event Creation was born. With it, operators can target the significant moment while video recording. For example, if a ROV arrives at the inspection target - oil pipeline at 10:35 AM, the operator can click and create an event button to target the moment as well as add a memo to describe the notable timing. This useful tool helps operators no need to replay the recording clips again and again, it is quite time-saving and accelerates the working report submission.

Besides the functions above, there are some different functions provided by different companies. Like DWTEK, we name our digital ROV recording system as “TiDVR IP”. We expand our TiDVR IP with versatile functions including “screenshot, network video sharing, black box auto-recording and save, project log excel export." Since the feature of the intuitive interface, TiDVR has been applied to global operations. Learn more: https://www.dwtekmarine.com/products/p/TiDVR

3 Reasons why an ROV Digital Recorder(DVR) is important

  • Save Time in Video Organize and Management
For users, time-saving is must the strongest benefit of using a ROV digital recorder. Every time a ROV operator goes back to onshore, they would definitely be tired and hope to complete the working report quickly, no one likes to spend a lot of time organizing the video clips. With a smart recording system like DWTEK’s TiDVR IP, it is capable of saving up to 25% time in video organizing, quickly feeding specific videos with data overlay to put them into the working report.
  • Precisely Making Subsea Decisions
ROV projects range from complicated missions such as cable inspection, construction support, etc. Consequently, immediate data feed through overlay while an operation is essential for operators to monitor and identify the target and subsea circumstance, helping them to make correct decisions.
  • Monitoring Target Changes
Additionally, it provides us with firsthand information like the thickness of the marine growth on the foundation, enabling us to monitor changes underwater and take fast action to avert a worse outcome.
