Celebrating the Full Moon Happy Moon Festival!
The Moon Festival is one of Taiwan's major annual festivals. During this time, admiring the moon is a classic activity. However, why does this tradition exist? It actually originates from the legendary story of "Chang'e Flies to the Moon."
According to the legend, a long time ago, ten suns suddenly appeared in the sky, scorching the earth. A hero named Hou Yi appeared, skilled in archery, helping shoot down nine of the suns, leaving only one, restoring normalcy to the land. To reward Hou Yi, the gods bestowed him the elixir of life. Later, Hou Yi married Chang'e and entrusted her with the elixir of life. However, Hou Yi's apprentice discovered this and threatened to steal it. In her desperation, Chang'e ate the elixir. In an instant, she felt her body become weightless and soared into the sky, eventually becoming an immortal on the moon.
Since then, Hou Yi was upset and could only gaze at the moon every day, missing Chang'e.It's said that this day happened to be the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which is why the tradition of moon viewing during the Mid-Autumn Festival was born.
